Originally released for the Apple II in early 1985 'Ultimore: A World Divided' was an unofficial expansion to Ultima III: Exodus created by Joel Fenton.

Joel placed adverts in various computer magazines and sold expansions for both Ultima III and the original Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

Over time these scenarios were lost. In recent years 'Ultimore: A World Divided' and 'Ultimore: Egypt' have been re-discovered, they are however in the Apple II format.

Now Daemon Master and Lord Ponsonby bring 'Ultimore: A World Divided' to the IBM PC for the very first time! No longer must you tackle Apple II emulators (or hardware), instead you can enjoy this classic scenario simply using the GOG version of Ultima III, with or without enhanced visuals and sound.

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS

This scenario requires the 'later' version of Ultima III (which is conveniently found on GOG here - https://www.gog.com/game/ultima_1_2_3). New characters will begin with 150 Food and 150 Health. The original version will not work with this scenario, characters in that version begin with 100 Food  and 100 Health.

Before installing this scenario it is recommended that you backup your existing installation of Ultima III, especially if you already have a game in progress.

To install, simply extract all of the files in this ZIP file into your Ultima III installation directory, overwriting all files as needed. This should include 21 .ULT map files and EXODUS.BIN

For those using the Ultima Upgrade Patch (allowing for 256 colours and improved sound) please backup your original EXODUS.BIN and copy EXODUS.BIN.UPGRADEPATCHVERSION to your install directory, then rename the latter to EXODUS.BIN

The Ultima Upgrade Patch is slightly different than the vanilla file and will not run with the basic game.

For those running the GOG version of the game makes sure that you disable 'Cloud Saves' in GOG Galaxy. Click the sliding toggles button next to 'Play', select 'Manage Installion', select 'Configure...', and uncheck the 'Sync local saves with GOG Galaxy Cloud' box. You will also need to edit the 'dosboxULTIMA3_single.conf' file in your Ultima III install directory. Find the line that reads "mount C "..\cloud_saves" -t overlay" and put a # at the start of the line. If you don't perform these steps GOG will replace your SOSARIA.ULT map with the original each time you load the game.

Then, start your copy of Ultima III as you would normally. I'd recommend creating a new party from scratch.

DONATIONS: Are not required or expected, however Lord Ponsonby spent many hours creating the UltiExo map editor for me so that I could in turn spend many hours hand crafting all of Joel's original maps. Many hours went into producing this scenario which we hope you will enjoy. If you enjoyed this scenario, eh, maybe throw us a few dollars for a coffee.

LEGAL: The 'Ultima' series of games, and the Ultima title are property of Electronic Arts. While only a mod in and of itself, it's important to acknowledge Joel Fenton as the original creator of the 'Ultimore:  A World Divided' scenario.

BUGS: Found a bug? Let me know in the comments. I've played through the scenario in its entirety twice and I think I got them all, but please let me know if you find something I missed. Joel's original scenario did include some spelling and grammar errors, I've left them intact intentionally.

Daemon Master, I'm not very good at all this computer stuff, but if I install Ultima 3 from GOG and then copy the Ultimore files to that directory, I should be good, correct?  How about getting the 256-color upgrade added to it.... what do I do for that?  Thanks, and sorry for being stupid about how to install.

Sorry for the delay, I was away on vacation.

So firstly, yes, the GOG version is compatible, in fact it's that version that I made the mod specifically for. You do need to turn off the 'Cloud Saves' as mentioned in the installation instructions though.

If you are looking to play the upgraded version of the game in 256 colour, then the good news is that 'Ultimore: A World Divided' is included in Pix's Ultima Patcher so you could do the whole thing in one hit and it might be a little easier to install too.

awesome…. Thank you for the reply.

Bug?

I may be mssing something, but I've been mapping the dungeons from the .ult files and the Time.ult file (was dungeon Time, now Fenton's Cave) seems to be unchanged, i.e. the same as the original, i.e. not the map shown in the ...Maps.pdf.

I installed the game using Pix's Patcher, but I've also checked the file in the download on this page, and they're both the same.

Interesting. I'll take a look at this today and get back to you ASAP.

Okay, no idea what happened there, but you're absolutely right, somehow the original TIME.ULT shipped with the mod and not the updated "Fenton's Cave".

This page has now been updated to Version 1.2 and includes the correct map.

Many thanks for bringing this bug to my attention, apologies if it interrupted your playthrough.

If you encounter any more bugs please let me know.

NEW VERSION: I cleared some time and got that new version out ASAP.

Turning off cloud saves in GOG Galaxy and make a small change in a .CONF file will stop GOG replacing the SOSARIA.ULT map every time you start play, allowing you to play with the new Sosaria map as intended.

I've included two copies of EXODUS.BIN now, one for the 'vanilla' game as found on GOG, and another for those use the Ultima Upgrade Patch as they are apparently slightly different. Those of you not using the upgrade patch will have found the game to hang when using the EXODUS.BIN in the original release.

The more you know. Many thanks to Fenyx4 for finding these issues and offering solutions.

Please, if you do find any bugs or have any problems installing or getting this scenario to run, let me know. I'm more than happy to problem solve and help you get it running.

BUG DISCOVERED: The included EXODUS.BIN file is actually slightly different due to me playing with the 'upgrade patch' that includes improved graphics and sound. This is not quite the same EXODUS.BIN file that the GOG version uses.

I will have an updated ZIP file in the next 24 hours that will include both the 'vanilla' EXODUS.BIN and the 'upgrade patch' EXODUS.BIN

Presently you can play the Ultimore scenario by not copying over the EXODUS.BIN file (Unless you are already using the upgrade patch yourself). You will lose some flavour text.

Also, it's worth mentioning that the 'cloud saves' that GOG uses may cause it to replace the SOSARIA.ULT map. It's advised that you turn off cloud saves for this game while running the Ultimore scenario.

Apologies for any inconveniences, if anyone else discovers any bugs or issues, please let me know.

Regards,

Daemon Master

I have the Ultima collection. Does the disc verison on the collection cd work with this download?

One easy way to tell is to make a new game with your version of Ultima III. If your party starts with 100 HP and 100 Food then it's the original version and won't work with this scenario properly. If you start with 150 HP and 150 Food then it's the newer version and this scenario will work fine with it.

(1 edit)

can it be played on DOS box? And when I go to alter the .bin and ult files are they just the EXODUS files?

Yeah absolutely. I play Ultima III in DosBox, most people do. The GOG version of the game runs DosBox.

All you want to do is make a backup of the files in the Ultima III directory, then copy my files into that directory overwriting the existing .ULT maps and EXODUS.BIN file.

When you start the game you'll still have the original title and main menu, but once you've made a party and entered into Sosaria you'll see that things are very different.
